FAQs
We help companies unlock product performance by applying materials science. Whether you're developing, scaling, or troubleshooting a product, we help you understand how your ingredients or materials behave, and how to get the most out of them.
Prosthetics: Materials Science and Engineering have led to the development of tailor-made prosthetic devices using alloys and 3D-printed polymers. These advancements have resulted in superior comfort and cost-efficiency compared to traditional materials like wood and leather.
Automotive Industry: The introduction of carbon fibre composites by McLaren in 1980 revolutionized Formula 1 racing. Carbon fibre is stronger than steel and five times lighter, leading to significant weight reduction and faster cars. Advanced materials like titanium, magnesium, and ceramics have further enhanced the durability and performance of F1 cars.
Pharmaceuticals: Materials Science has played a crucial role in the development of solid oral dosage forms. For example, by being able to interrogate the microstructure of GSK's HIV drug Tivicay, the optimal tablet disintegration mechanism could be established, leading to the launch of a more robust formulation.
From a very early age I wanted to be an inventor. But there are no school subjects in 'inventing', so I gravitated towards Maths, Physics & Chemistry. It was by chance when I didn't quite get the grades I needed to study Chemistry & Computer Sciences, that I found the course on Materials Technology.
I was instantly drawn to it, because it had all the standard science elements, but also practical elements like design, lab skills, failure analysis and innovation. It taught me that how a material behaves at the macro level is intrinsically linked to its structure at the micro level. The microstructure is king, and knowing this has made it fairly straightforward to move from one industry to the next.
