SCIENTISTS IN INDUSTRY

Most scientists who arrive here have spent a long time assuming the friction they feel is just them.

It's not. It's a pattern, and you may have an idea of which one is yours.

Take the Structural Patterns Diagnostic to find out your dominant pattern

The book started as a note to myself. After 25 years of watching scientifically excellent people hit ceilings that had nothing to do with their technical ability, I wanted to write down everything I wished someone had handed me on my first day in industry. It is due for publication later in the year. If you want to be among the first to read it, leave your email below.

"I have known Paul from past 10 years. He was the first person I asked for guidance on how to secure a permanent position at GSK while I worked there as a contractor. I was a fresh PhD graduate and failed to understand how I could be rejected for an entry level job which I was so confident about. I would see Paul would listen to my frustration patiently and give me real life examples to explain scenarios on possible reason for rejection, but the very next moment he would motivate me and help me build my confidence to keep going. It is his support and guidance that has helped me secure a permanent position at GSK. He has extensive professional network which really helps drive referrals. When I expressed my interest in moving from Pharma to Consumer it was Paul’s recommendation that landed me in my current position. I will always be grateful to Paul for his unwavering support and for believing in my potential."

"Paul brings a really helpful and clear structure to the guidance and advice he provides – even if the conversation from my side can feel a bit scattered and complex, he always brings it down to clear tangible and actionable actions to follow up on. He is naturally relatable, based off his own experiences but also just his ability to build rapport and establish trust and comfort with others. I appreciate his method to help people to actually analyse and breakdown their own thoughts and actions. He helps build that type of thinking and approach to self-reflection so that those root causes to different situations can be focussed on. Would I recommend him to others in a similar position? Absolutely!"

"I found the CV support most useful, although I’m sure the interview advice will become just as useful once I’ve had more chances to put it into practice. I particularly liked the breakdown of the types of interview questions and how to structure answers, as well as the clear link between what is on your CV and what you are likely to be asked. Would I recommend him to others in a similar position? Yes. And if I can get him to put the effort in, I imagine Paul will be hearing from my brother when he's done with Uni."

" I would totally recommend his advice!!! I thought my CV was really good because I listed everything I’d done in the past. But he made me realize it shouldn’t just be a collection of facts. He helped me find ways to tailor it for different positions that I may apply for, so it looked more appealing to recruiters. And I’m in this role now because it worked!!!”

" Following a career of more than 25 years with the same company, I found it difficult to translate my experience into a strong CV. Although I had a wealth of experience, my CV was too long and contained far too much detail. Paul helped me recognise the value and strengths in my career, present my experience in a much clearer and more succinct way, and gave me confidence in what l had to offer. Thanks to his support, I secured an interview - and ultimately the job."
