I am currently re-reading a book called ‘Nine Lies About Work’ by Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall.
The first ‘lie’ that really got me thinking was “People Care About the Company They Work For”.
Now I see many people on LinkedIn talking about how great it is to work for their company, but according to the book, they are not really assessing the company when they say this; what they are really assessing is their 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 within that company.
Their team is where they get first-hand experience of how a collective group of people can work together to achieve their goals. The ability to do this (or not) will directly affect their experience of their company.
This is why you can ask 100 teams within the same company if they have "confidence in the company’s future" (a firm favourite on the Annual Survey), and, you will always get a spread of results. I reiterate – it is the 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺, so there shouldn't really be any spread in the data.
The takeaway for managers?...
Look after your teams!
Their perception of the whole company rests on your shoulders.
