When I was first faced with this question, I thought the answer would be a resounding ‘yes,’ based on my background working in multinational companies. Hardcore scientists could get so far in the organisation, but not really to THE top position. But, after doing only a cursory level of research, I realised that we have several current examples of major companies that are led by STEM experts.
CEOs like Jeff Bezos, for example, studied electrical engineering and computer science before founding Amazon. Elon Musk, who has courted much controversy throughout his career (and continues to do so), has a background in physics and engineering. Both have used their technical backgrounds to drive innovation in their respective companies.
So, what is it that they possess that has enabled them to achieve this level of success? Is the analytical mind more suited to innovation? Or is it something about their ability to solve problems? Or are these two examples just ‘outliers’, with most CEOs coming from the more ‘traditional business degree’ route?
Again, I thought the answer would be that Bezos and Musk are ‘outliers’, but with the ease of the internet search these days, my perceptions were righted, yet again. There are many other examples of STEM background CEOs in major companies - including Sundar Pichai of Google/Alphabet who has a background in Materials Science and Engineering – a subject close to my own heart!
So, the future looks bright for those who want to pursue STEM careers, particularly in today’s tech driven world. The ability to analyse, innovate, and solve complex problems isn't just a technical skill - it's a leadership requirement!
